Corliss Waitman is a name that won’t end up sticking in the minds of many Mississippi State fans in the years to come.
However the graduate transfer punter, who never saw the field for the Bulldogs this season after his sixth year of eligibility was denied by the NCAA, indirectly helped in pushing current State punter Tucker Day to the strong year he’s now enjoying.
Day was MSU’s primary punter back in 2018 as a freshman, but even he admits he wasn’t as consistent as he needed to be. That was part of the reason Mississippi State went out and brought in Waitman to compete for the job. Of course the NCAA’s eventual ruling made sure Waitman never had the chance to win the spot, but his mere presence over the summer lit a spark under Day and he’s continuing to reap the benefits of a competitive offseason.
