Michael Winfield celebrates a play during Starkville Academy’s homecoming victory over Washington School.

One minute.

That’s all it took for Starkville Academy to defeat Washington School on Friday night, scoring two touchdowns in the last 60 seconds of the first half to swing all the momentum their way.

At first though, that momentum belonged to Washington. The Generals jumped to a 7-0 lead over the Volunteers with a little trickery in the first quarter. On fourth and 14, Washington quarterback Caleb Janous motioned out from behind center to split out wide.  What looked like a reverse following a direct snap to the running back quickly turned into a pass back to Janous from his own wide receiver. The 35-yard touchdown pass was the quick score Starkville Academy has gotten a little too used to giving up, says Volunteer linebacker Matt Miller.
