Mississippi State defense

Joe Moorhead considers Bob Shoop a pretty smart guy.

Mississippi State’s second-year defensive coordinator went to Yale University and has schemed for some of the best defenses in the country. Just last season, the Bulldogs were tops nationally in total defense and scoring defense but three first rounders are gone from that team and numerous first and second teamers.

So this year, Shoop is figuring out ways to shield the Bulldogs young and inexperienced defense to have some success. It hasn’t always been pretty through four games but MSU is figuring out ways to keep teams out of the end zone. On Saturday, some key stops in the red zone were the difference in a second half where all the pressure was on the defensive side of the football as the Bulldogs pulled off a 28-13 win over Kentucky.
