INDIANOLA – Just as they had done many times before, the Starkville 10-year-old Dizzy Dean All-Stars started well in the South State championship game against Greenwood on Monday afternoon.
Starkville scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Greenwood 9-2 to claim the South State title.
“They really haven’t had a weak moment yet,” Starkville coach Ben Carver said. “They tend to jump ahead early in the game. From a mindset standpoint, that really goes a long way.”
After Starkville jumped out to its 5-0 lead, Greenwood scored its first of two runs in the second inning.
The two teams traded runs in the third inning, then Starkville put the finishing touches on its victory with two more runs added in the fourth frame.
