Grand Slam 12-year-old baseball

Starkville 12-year-old hitter Jackson Riekhof takes a swing during Friday’s Grand Slam game against Winona at McKee Park.

It was a punch in the gut for every player and coach of the Starkville 12-year-old All-Stars last week when they lost unexpectedly in the Dizzy Dean State championship’s first round in Grenada.

The All-Stars had dominated the competition on the way to the South State Championship the prior weekend and were poised to win it all in the State title before falling 6-3. They had a short turnaround as they started the Grand Slam tournament in Starkville on Friday night at McKee Park as they played the first two games of pool play.

Starkville came back with a vengeance on Friday as they run-ruled both Winona and Louisville to earn the No. 1 seed in bracket play beginning on Saturday afternoon.
