Starkville High School wide receiver Rufus Harvey (6) tries to break a tackle during last year’s game against Warren Central.

It was almost an identical situation two years ago for Starkville when they went to Vicksburg to take on the Warren Central Vikings.

The Yellow Jackets were a game ahead of everyone else in Class 6A, Region 2 with just two games to go. A win over the Vikings would have sealed things up. Just after SHS went back into the locker room from warmups to get ready for the game, the bottom fell out and a flood came to Vicksburg along with temperatures in the 40s.

By the end of the nightmarish game, the Jackets had lost 23-0 and made the next Friday a must-win. Though Starkville did eventually take home the division crown, that night hasn’t been lost on head coach Chris Jones, who knows how tough it is to play on the road at Warren Central.
