Starkville Academy football

Captains Sam Clark (18) and Ben Brown (16) of Starkville Academy meet Lamar School’s Lake Morgan (38) and Eli Mitchell (53) for the coin toss prior to the season-opening game at J.E. Logan Field in August.

It was on a hot day in late August.

That was when the Starkville Academy Volunteers hosted the Lamar School Raiders to open the 2019 football season at J.E. Logan Field.

Lamar School was able to win that matchup 33-13, but Starkville Academy gets another chance at the Raiders Friday night in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Vols will be making the trip to Meridian for the early November outing with much cooler temperatures expected.

“We’re excited about going there and playing,” Starkville Academy coach Chase Nicholson said. “We just want to continue to work and get better and have our shot. Destiny works in strange ways, so it’s laid out in front of us for a reason. If we go and play as hard as we can, it should be a lot of fun.”
