Before the fans of the Houston Astros, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Texas Rangers and the Colorado Rockies came to learn about the pitching ability of Roy Oswalt, those in the community of Weir in Choctaw County of Mississippi watched him on the mound.
Oswalt, who enjoyed a successful Major League Baseball career from 2001-13, will be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday in Jackson.
After finding out last fall that he was going to be included among Mississippi’s greatest athletes, Oswalt said it was an honor to be recognized in such a manner.
“There are a lot of great athletes to come out of Mississippi with football players like Jerry Rice, Brett Favre and other guys who have done well in sports,” Oswalt said. “To go in there with guys in that stature is pretty amazing.”
For more on Oswalt, see Thursday's Starkville Daily News. Fellow Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame inductee and former Mississippi State quarterback and football coach Rockey Felker will be featured on Friday.
