Wes Silver has put on quite the power display lately for the East Webster Wolverines.
After hitting two home runs in East Webster’s 17-7 win against Morton in the Newton County Tournament on March 23, Silver came back to get one home run for the Wolverines in a 10-0 victory over rival Eupora on March 26 and went deep once again as they beat the Eagles 9-6 on Friday.
Silver has been chosen the OCH Regional Medical Center Athlete of the Week for the contributions he’s made to the East Webster offense.
For the season, Silver has five home runs, four doubles and 20 runs battled in for the Wolverines. He has a .541 batting average with 20 hits in 37 at-bats and has scored 16 runs.
“He hit for a high average last year as a 10th grader and he has matured a lot as a hitter and as a young man,” East Webster coach Wes Johnson said. “He just has a plan when he goes up to the plate. He realizes that he may not see pitches to hit, but if he does see pitches to hit, he’s ready to hit it.”
Silver has been right in the middle of the batting order as a starter for the Wolverines for several seasons now.
Johnson said Silver has always had skill when it comes to hitting, but has taken it to another level because of plate discipline.
“The biggest jump he made from last year to this year is realizing what the at-bat is, not being selfish at the plate and swinging at bad pitches,” Johnson said. “If they put him on, the guys behind him will get him in.”
East Webster has been hot as a team just as Silver has been as a batter.
The Wolverines took an 11-game winning streak into Tuesday night’s Class 2A, Region 2 game at Calhoun City. They host Oak Hill Academy on Thursday and Calhoun City on Friday.
