Mississippi State pitcher Brandon Smith throws during a game last season.

A key piece of Mississippi State’s projected 2020 starting pitching staff won’t be able to play in the upcoming baseball season.

The Starkville Daily News confirmed on Wednesday that right-hander Brandon Smith is slated to undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the entirety of the upcoming campaign. The news was first reported by 247Sports.

Smith was the starting pitcher in one of MSU’s two fall exhibition games against Louisiana last weekend, but left shortly into the appearance. Now, it appears that will be Smith’s last time to throw a ball from a pitcher’s mound for some time.
