Mississippi State's Jake Mangum, right, celebrates his RBI single as Ole Miss second baseman Jacob Adams (1) hangs his head during Saturday's game in Oxford.

OXFORD – It was almost inevitable that Mississippi State’s Jake Mangum was going to come through.

Mangum has been an Ole Miss killer his entire career. Time and time again, Mangum has haunted the Rebels. Yet when MSU’s senior centerfielder stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh on Saturday night, he was 0-for-3. He’d already committed a couple of errors in the field.

No matter. Mangum wasn’t going to let a game against Ole Miss go by without making some noise.

Mangum delivered a game-tying single in a six-run seventh inning as the No. 5 Bulldogs defeated the No. 11 Rebels 8-5 at Swayze Field in Oxford. The victory clinched the three-game weekend set for MSU ahead of Sunday’s noon series finale. It was only fitting that Mangum was right in the middle of it all.
