Arlee Oswalt gets ready for her at-bat during Starkville Academy's softball game against Kemper Academy.

There’s no other way to put how the first day of softball season was starting out for Starkville Academy.

The Lady Volunteers gave up four runs in the first inning against Kemper Academy and were down 6-0 in the third. It was difficult enough that Coach Thomas Berkery’s team was playing with quite a bit of youth on the field, but the team had lost its starting pitcher, shortstop and catcher before the season ever began.

Something happened as the game started to evolve, though – the players started to evolve with it. Starkville Academy slowly began to chip away at that lead to the point that it was in striking distance and then the Lady Vols got over the top in a game shortened to five innings.

Arlee Oswalt sent a ground ball through the legs of the shortstop for the Lady Rams and two runs raced home to give Starkville Academy a thrilling 8-7 victory to start off the season the right way.
