Support within the team and a good work ethic are two key ingredients for success.
That’s exactly what the Starkville Academy junior varsity boys basketball had throughout the season and the Volunteers were rewarded for their efforts.
Last Saturday, Starkville Academy capped an undefeated season by knocking off Lamar and Heritage in the district tournament at home to claim the championship.
When coach Bill Ball first saw his collection of Junior Vols, he saw something special in them.
“When I first agreed to take the the junior high, and I’ve never coached junior high in my life, I watched the way they interacted with each other all of the way back to summer camps through September workouts and through the season,” Ball said. “I knew they were a special group and would be fun to coach because they all cheer for each other. No matter who was in the game and no matter who was having a bad game or who was having a good game, they would always put the team first. I know it’s kind of a cliche, but it certainly helps and certainly matters.”
As the season progressed and the wins began to add up, the chemistry and bond grew within the team.
