Starkville High School football

Starkville High School running back Amariyon Howard (23) takes the football from quarterback Luke Altmyer during a game earlier this season.

There’s really no other way to explain last Friday night’s Jekyll and Hyde act from the Starkville Yellow Jackets than incredible.

The Jackets couldn’t have played any worse in the first half as they trailed Warren Central 17-6. SHS head Chris Jones was sitting a few starters in a decision he made coming into the game and that included Rufus Harvey on offense and Keyshawn Lawrence on defense. While the coach wouldn’t repeat what was said in the locker room, it evidently worked as the Jackets outscored the Vikings 44-7 and went on to clinch the Class 6A, Region 2 championship in a 50-24 victory.

“We had a little pep talk and made a few adjustments as a staff,” Jones said.
