Stanford baseball

Stanford catcher Maverick Handley, right, walks out of the dugout next to coach David Esquer during a baseball game earlier this season.

David Esquer knows what it’s like to win it all at Stanford.

The Stanford alum helped lead his team to the College World Series and won a national championship as a starting shortstop in 1987 to close out his career with the Cardinal.

After a long, successful tenure with Cal, Esquer returned to his home on The Farm and won the Pac-12 last season at 46-12 and he’s followed that up with a 45-12 record this season.

What Esquer has tried to deliver in his first two years is that same experience that he had as a player so many years ago. He wants his team to experience Omaha, Neb., the CWS and a national title. To get there, the  Cardinal had to get over the hump and get themselves into a super regional. Now, they’ve got another major hurdle to take down Mississippi State in Starkville this weekend.
