Starkville High School football

Starkville High School quarterback Luke Altmyer, right, talks with offensive linemen during the spring jamboree.

It didn’t take long for Randall Montgomery to know he had a tremendous weapon in his new offense as first-year coordinator in Starkville.

The former Columbus head coach spent last season at Louisville High School and is now coaching under Chris Jones as the two build up the offense around junior quarterback Luke Altmyer. The young quarterback split time at quarterback as a freshman and then was the guy last season.

It was there where he really cut his teeth in Class 6A football with 1,952 passing yards last season, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions. He was a 69 percent passer and the scary thing is he’s gotten better. For Montgomery, he’s seeing the rapid improvement even from the spring when he first laid eyes on Altmyer as his new signal caller.
