Dizzy Dean State Tournaments set

Staff Writer

It's tournament time for Dizzy Dean All-Star youth baseball teams and Starkville will be represented throughout North Mississippi during the next two weeks.

There will be two events next week in Louisville as the 9-year-olds and the 11-year-olds will get into South State action.

Louisville will be busy on Thursday as the Starkville 9's take on Grenada Youth first at 1 p.m., while the Starkville 11's will be playing at the same time against Houston.

"We've got a great group of guys," Starkville 11-year-old coach Reggie Campbell Jr. said. "I wasn't familiar many of the guys because I've just got back into coaching, but it's been fun with the group of guys we've got. They've played well together."

Campbell's team was supposed to play a warm-up tournament over the weekend, but he was not certain that would happen.

Also opening play on Thursday will be the South State 6-year-old tournament in Greenwood. Starkville plays Hernando American at 4 p.m.

The rest of the age groups get started during the week of July 4.

Starkville's age 8 All-Stars will also be in Louisville, but get a first round bye and won't play until 5:30 p.m. on July 5, while the Starkville 12-year-olds are scheduled to take on West Point in Grenada on July 5 with an early wakeup call at 9 a.m.

The 7-year-old Starkville squad will participate in the South State tournament in Houston and its first game will be against Newton County on July 5 at 2:30 p.m.
