Two people were injured in an apparent drive-by shooting on Highway 82 early Saturday morning.
The Starkville Police Department said in a press release Monday morning that officers responded around 2:02 a.m. to the report of a gunshot victim and a wreck on Highway 82, between Highway 25 and Highway 389.
SPD says the victim’s vehicle is believed to have been traveling east on Highway 82 before it was struck by multiple gunshots from another vehicle, which resulted in the vehicle leaving the roadway.
SPD officers and Oktibbeha County deputies found the vehicle off the roadway and two subjects with apparent gunshot wounds.
Two other occupants were also in the vehicle but were not injured in the shooting.
The press release says officers and deputies began to render aid on the victims until medical personnel arrived, with one victim airlifted from the scene for further treatment at a hospital outside of the area and the other transported to OCH Regional Medical Center.
The extent of their injuries or current conditions is not known at this time.
The victims were passing through Starkville on their way to their residence in Columbus. This incident remains under active investigation.
No arrests had been made in connection with the shooting at the time of this article's publication.
