While some may still be frustrated at the raised medians on Highway 12, the Mississippi Department of Transportation’s most recent data suggests the safety improvements have been successful in their mission.
MDOT on Wednesday announced that Phase 1 of the Highway 12 safety improvement project from Old Highway 12 to Eckford Drive saw a 42% reduction in automobile crashes from 2015 to 2018 — which follows the Phase 1 completion in 2017.
Phase 2 of the project, which was completed late last year, runs from Eckford Drive to Spring Street.
“We do have that preliminary data and it shows the year to year comparison, and 42% reduction is definitely positive and we expect to see improvements in crash reductions,” said MDOT spokesman Jace Ponder. “There’s not enough data for the second phase since the project is so new, but as the year continues, we anticipate the overall project will have a similar result.”
