A vacancy on the Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District Board of Trustees was filled Tuesday evening by the city’s Board of Aldermen.
Aldermen interviewed three candidates for the position and ultimately chose Wesley Gordon. Gordon, who was raised in Columbus, currently works for Mississippi State University as a fund-raiser.
The vacancy came when Lee Brand announced last month he would be resigning in July. The school board term will last until March of 2020.
In his interview, Gordon said public schools had played a vital role in his and his wife's life.
"We're both products of Mississippi public schools," Gordon said. "We both believe in the power of public schools and what they mean to a city. Not only is it good for economic development and the recruitment of students, it's also great for the children of Starkville."
Gordon said he was prepared to join the school board because he had a great deal of experience working on boards.
"I have been a part or around a board my entire adult life, as far as my professional career goes," Gordon said.
