EMCCs Starstruck 2010 on the hunt for new talent

MAYHEW – East Mississippi Community College’s business and marketing management program is getting ready for StarStruck 2010, a talent competition that will award winning contestants up to $2,500 in cash and prizes.
The show will be Oct. 14 at the Lyceum auditorium at EMCC’s Golden Triangle campus. Curtain time is 7 p.m.
The event was held for the first time last year, when Landon Duane Ewing of West Point walked away with the grand prize for his performance in the Urban/R&B category. Other winners included Bruce Johnson and Matt Warren of Columbus in the Rock/Pop category and Ashleigh Agustin of Starkville in the Country/Gospel category.
This year, the competition is searching for talent in the same categories. Judges will select the top performance in each category, and the act with the highest score will receive the grand prize. The winner will choose between a press kit to include a three-song demo track recorded in a professional studio, website, album graphics and more or a $150 pre-paid Visa card.
The deadline to enter the contest is Oct. 8.
“We wanted to bring together some of the untouched, undiscovered talent here in the Golden Triangle, expose them and create opportunity,” said EMCC marketing instructor Lori Smith.
Smith’s event marketing class is handling all the arrangements for the contest. The experience is serving double-duty as a learning experience and a fund-raiser to help pay expenses for an upcoming trip.
“We have seven students who will be attending the Collegiate Leadership Academy this year in New York City in November,” said sophomore Lindsay Wade. “I’m excited that we will have the opportunity to meet and talk with industry leaders in New York from areas ranging from sports and entertainment marketing to finance and international marketing.”
StarStruck 2010 will feature local industry professionals and performers as judges. Beyond public and media exposure, participants will have a chance to connect to a recruiting network of industry pros looking for talent – and talent looking to connect to the entertainment industry.
