The suspect charged in the shooting death of a Starkville optometrist at her practice in the Highway 12 Walmart last year will have a mental health competency hearing at the end of this month.
According to court documents filed this week, William Thomas “Tommy” Chisholm will have a hearing at 9 a.m. on July 26 in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court to determine his competency to stand trial.
He is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Dr. Shauna Witt on Jan. 13, 2018.
Eyewitnesses claim Chisholm entered the store where Witt’s practice was located and fired several shots with a pistol, killing Witt and hitting a bystander, though the bullet only pierced the victim’s coat and did not result in physical injury.
Chisholm and Witt had previously been in a dating relationship.
He is also charged with aggravated assault in connection to the other victim hit in the shooting.
