One man was killed and another seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in what state troopers believe was a chain reaction crash.
The crash occurred about 4 p.m. on U.S. 82 West near the Polly Bell Road intersection, Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Brian Mobley said Tuesday night.
Based on initial information and examination of the accident scene, it is believed that a westbound yellow Mack tractor-trailer collided with a green Dodge pickup from behind, causing it to crash into a blue Ford tractor.
However, the specific circumstances of the accident remain under investigation, Mobley said.
The driver of the blue tractor was pronounced dead by Coroner Michael Hunt at the crash scene, but MHP officials are not yet releasing his name pending notification of his family, Mobley said.
The pickup’s driver was airlifted from the crash scene to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Information about the pickup driver’s medical condition could not be confirmed Tuesday night, and MHP officials were also still attempting to contact his family at press time Tuesday.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, and his name will be released as MHP officials confirm more details of the accident, Mobley said late Tuesday night.
