Logan Maddox and Ryan Lacy are emerging as the top golfers for the Starkville Yellowjackets.
SHS golf coach Sam Bryant sees the pair getting better and knows the team has a chance to go as far as they can take it.
"They are starting to work some things out and their scores are where they should be," Bryant said. "Ryan and Logan are our cement. They carry this team. That's what we are looking for from them."
Maddox shot a 37 to lead the Jackets during a three-team meet with Oxford and New Hope Thursday afternoon at the Mississippi State Golf Course, but Lacy followed closely behind his teammate with a score of 38.
Lacy likes the progress they have been making for SHS.
"We've both been getting better and playing well," Lacy said. "It's happening at the right time."
As a team, the Jackets finished just one shot off of winning the match.
Oxford scored a 163, while Starkville carded a 164 and New Hope finished with a 175.
Jace Hobart was third individually for the Jackets with a score of 44, while Cameron Maddox chipped in a 45 and Sam Willis had a 65.
Bryant saw the meet as a preview to what his SHS squad might see later down the road in the Class 5A Tournament. Oxford and New Hope are fellow Class 5A schools.
"I wanted to see how we stack up against what should be the front runners in 5A," Bryant said. "We held our own, but I think we could have improved some and had better strokes, but that's the nature of the game.
"At least we see how we stack up with competition in 5A which I'm pleased with right now."
Lacy was able to take some confidence away from the match with the Chargers and Trojans.
"It was a good measuring stick," Lacy said. "We ended up losing by one, but it's good to see we can compete with them and we have a chance if we play well."
