Edward Montgomery

Edward Montgomery, 80, of Starkville, died Wednesday, March 7, 2012.
He was born March 24 on one of the largest dairy farms in Oktibbeha County to Tom and Ruth Montgomery. He continued the family tradition of dairy farming into the early 1970s on Montgomery Street and in Oktoc.
His great-grandfather, Col. W. B. Montgomery, brought the first Jersey cow to the United States, and was instrumental in the dairy industry and agricultural education.
A graduate of Starkville High School and Mississippi State University, Montgomery served as an Army Captain in the peacekeeping force in Germany and during the turbulent 1960s in the Mississippi National Guard.
Montgomery served as director for Felix Long Hospital, and was the Administrator for the Oktibbeha County Hospital during it’s original building and moving phases.
He retired as coordinator of housing maintenance and facilities at Mississippi State University.
For nearly 30 years, Montgomery served as chapter advisor for the Gamma Upsilon chapter of Sigma Chi fraternity on the Mississippi State campus. During that time, he worked with more than 1,000 young men during the transitional time into adulthood. He was named Order of Constantine Sig, the fraternity’s highest order.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Edward Hollinshead Montgomery; and wife, Ada Harvey Montgomery.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Carroll Sullivan; grandsons, Dennis Montgomery Sullivan of Birmingham, Ala., and Hal Edward Sullivan and Patrick Ross Sullivan of New York City; and loving friend, Sarah Anthony of Greenwood.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church.
Visitation is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church in Starkville.
