The Starkville Academy girls' basketball team already has two trophies under its belt.
Today, the Lady Volunteers start a run at another one.
Starkville Academy plays Bowling Green of Franklinton, La., at 3 p.m. on the campus of Mississippi College in Clinton in the first round of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Overall State Championship.
For the second week in a row, the Lady Vols have to deal with a short turnaround. Once again their focus has not dwindled and head coach Glenn Schmidt welcomed having Monday and Tuesday to prepare.
"I was glad to have two days off," Schmidt said. "There was a game Monday and there was games (Tuesday), so I felt fortunate we had Monday to come to school and kind of get over the hoop la and everybody congratulating them. They were very focused at practice (Monday)."
Schmidt didn't have a long time to celebrate Saturday's Class AAA State Title. She began to prepare for the Lady Buccaneers that night.
"Started Saturday watching them on tape," Schmidt said. "They are a very good club. They are 34-3. They are the No. 2 team from Class 2A. They played Leake in the finals and got beat."
The last two games the Lady Vols have struggled on offense and found themselves down in the fourth quarter.
Schmidt is not concerned with that because of the level of competition they were playing and the fact that both defenses played very well.
"Because of who we are playing," Schmidt said of why the offense hasn't produced like it has in the past. "You look back over the schedule, every time we played those particular teams, the scores are very low. It's to be expected. You just have to hope that you find a way to win."
No Lady Volunteer squad has made it this far. The other two titles were big, but this one is for the whole state of Mississippi and maybe for one team from Louisiana.
Schmidt and her players don't talk about those things. It helped them win the past two weeks and so nothing is changing this week.
"We don't every talk about that kind of stuff," Schmidt said. "We never talk about winning or how big or little something is. Everybody else does. We just try to play our game, practice our stuff and go see what happens. It's a goal. I'm sure the players are thinking let's win it all. We are not going (today) to do anything but try to win."
