Primary election to use split precincts

Oktibbeha County Election Commission Chairman Myles Carpenter says residents should be aware of which Mississippi congressional district they fall as the state primary nears.
Due to congressional redistricting, Carpenter said, a portion of Oktibbeha County was split from Miss. District 3 to Miss. District 1. Areas affected by the move include Maben, Bell School House, Sturgis/North Bradley precincts and a portion of Center Grove/North Adaton and Craig Springs/South Bradley precincts. Those portions also includes the old Center Grove precinct and a part of the old Bradley precinct.
“The redistricting affected probably a couple of thousand people in Oktibbeha County,” Carpenter said. “The main thing that will affect them will be who they vote for in the House of Representatives.”
Rep. Allan Nunnelee, R-Dist. 1, defeated Democratic incumbent Travis Childers in the November 2010 election. Rep. Gregg Harper, R-Dist. 3, has served as Dist. 3’s representative since 2009.
“The circuit clerk and the election commissioners are working diligently to have the lines redrawn so as not to have split precincts,” Carpenter said. “Due to time restraints, the primary election will use the split precinct lines. Voters being moved should seek out a sample ballot and be aware that they will be voting for District 1 candidates.”
