For one night of the year, the streets of Timbercove take on such nicknames as “Reindeer Village,” and candlelit bags line the streets, accompanying other Christmas decorations.
Residents attracted visitors Sunday night with the Timbercove Luminary, a neighborhood tradition dating back about 15-20 years.
Joe Baker, chairman of the luminary, said the event predates a parallel Christmas decoration competition he began in conjunction with a neighbor no longer living in Starkville. On Sunday, Baker led judges from outside the neighborhood through Timbercove, looking for homes worthy of first, second and third prizes.
“We want to draw attention to the neighborhood,” Baker said. “It makes it more attractive for people who may be wanting to move into the neighborhood.
Demi Dunne, a resident of Dunbrook Drive in Timbercove, said not everyone participates in the luminary each year, but she and her family love it.
“There’s a sense of belonging to the neighborhood that comes with it, and it’s a good way to get the kids in the spirit of decorating for Christmas,” Dunne said.
