SHS student killed in single-car wreck

An 18-year-old student from Starkville High School was killed in a car accident over the weekend.
Breanna Hampton was a passenger in a single-vehicle accident which occurred Saturday at approximately 9:43 p.m. on Sand Road near Louisville Street.
She was air lifted to University Medical Center in Jackson but later died due to her injuries.
The driver of the vehicle was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus with injuries but was later released.
No further information was released by the Starkville Police Department, and the investigation is ongoing.
“Breanna was certainly a contributing member of this high school — very well respected, very friendly individual, liked by her peers and teachers,” Starkville High School Principal Keith Fennell said. “We know she was responsible for making a positive difference in our student body as well as our community.”
High school administrators and counselors were in SHS classrooms Monday to speak with the students about the tragedy. Seniors gathered together to remember their classmate and friend.
“It gave them an opportunity to lean on one another and help each other through this process,” Fennell said. “I asked them to focus on the positives and celebrate her life. She had a lot to contribute, and it’s those positive memories that help us through times like this.”
Starkville High School will continue to provide support to those students who need it.
“We are deeply saddened by Breanna’s death in this tragic accident. Our hearts go out to Breanna’s family, friends and classmates,” Interim Superintendent Beth Sewell said. “We ask that you remember them and the entire Starkville High School family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.”
