While announcing his candidacy for the office of Oktibbeha County Tax Assessor/Collector, Allen Morgan made the following statement:
“Citizens of Oktibbeha County, first and foremost I would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for taking the time to read this letter.
My name is Allen Morgan and I am seeking the office of Oktibbeha County Tax Assessor/Collector in the Nov. 8 election. With over 29 years of experience with the Mississippi State Tax Commission, I believe I am very qualified for this position.
I would like to take just a moment to tell you a little about myself. I am an Oktibbeha County resident and property owner. My wife is Debbie Fuller Morgan, and she is employed at BancorpSouth in Starkville. We have three children. Tonya is a nail technician, Allison is a fifth grade teacher at Henderson and Tyler is a senior accounting major at MSU. My wife and I are both active members of Meadowview Baptist Church, where I serve as a trustee and usher; Debbie is the pianist. I am the treasurer of the Oktibbeha County Forest Farmer’s Association and a member of the Oktibbeha County Agriculture Club.
In 2006, I retired from the Mississippi State Tax Commission after 29 years of service. Throughout my career, I attended numerous schools, seminars and training sessions, including the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy. In 1993, I was selected to be a member of the State Tax Commission’s Law Enforcement Unit, consisting of only 10 people chosen statewide to be sworn officers, personally appointed by the Chairman of the State Tax Commission. Members of this law enforcement unit were assigned special assignments, not only in our designated districts, but also traveling throughout Mississippi working in all nine tax districts, covering all 82 counties. I have personally collected millions of dollars in delinquent state taxes. Working in a two-fold position as a Law Enforcement Special Agent and Revenue Officer Specialist, I supervised the work of the revenue officers in the Columbus district, covering ten counties. I also managed the district office in the absence of the district manager. I truly feel that I have the experience necessary to perform the duties of tax assessor and collector.
The Oktibbeha County Tax Assessor/Collector’s Office is responsible for collecting millions of tax dollars each year; therefore, this office needs to be filled with a person you can trust, a person who is honest, a person who is proven and a person who has the experience dealing with taxes, tags, and other criteria that is essential to the everyday demands of this office. I believe I have all of these qualifications.
As your tax assessor/collector, professional, courteous, and timely service will be a top priority. All citizens will be treated fairly and with respect. I will be available and accessible for any tax issues or problems that may arise. Because the tax office is involved in the collection of taxes that help fund a variety of government services, accurate records will be kept at all times. You can be assured I will properly manage the day to day operations of this office.
If elected, there are several new services that I would like to put into place. With all of the technology available, I would like to pursue the process of creating a web site for the Oktibbeha County Tax Assessor/Collectors Office. It will include an FAQ page concerning things such as tags, titles, homestead exemption, due dates, etc. and other helpful information concerning commonly asked tax questions. I will also pursue the process of accepting online property tax payments and car tag renewals for those who prefer the convenience of doing business online. I believe this service will be cost effective for the taxpayer and for the tax office. There are approximately 13 other counties in the state already using this convenient service and as busy as we all are, I feel we could all benefit from having such a convenient way to pay our taxes.
Citizens of Oktibbeha County, the Oktibbeha County Tax Assessor/Collector’s Office works directly through and with the State Tax Commission on a daily basis. I have the necessary experience, knowledge, and understanding of taxes, tags, titles, and other criteria that’s vital to performing the demands of this office. My experience also allows me to have first-hand knowledge of the internal structure of the State Tax Commission, its functions, and where to get help when needed. I offer you my 29 years of experience in public service for this most important position of Tax Assessor/Collector in your county. Giving you the respectful, courteous, accurate, and honest service you deserve will be my utmost priority. Please consider my experience, education, and values in this field. I humbly ask for your support and vote in the Nov. 8 election.
