Starkville police arrested a Mississippi State student early Saturday morning after allegedly stabbing another student outside of a bar in the Cotton District.
SPD Chief David Lindley said officers responded to Rock Bottom Bar, 701 University Drive, after an emergency call was placed. There they discovered Joseph Ryan Davis, 21, of Ocean Springs, suffered multiple stab wounds to his torso.
Rock Bottom Manager Bart Lucius said he called 911 after witnessing the stabbing. He said the incident occurred on the public sidewalk near the bar after a security guard was involved in an altercation on the street with an individual. Lucius said Davis was assisting the security guard. The victim was moved to the area behind the bar after the attack for his own safety until first responders arrived.
Davis was transported by ambulance to Baptist Regional Medical Center in Columbus for surgery. Lindley said he is listed in serious condition following surgery.
The attack occurred in front of a large group of people, Lindley said. A suspect was determined – William Daniel Prince, 25, of 109 Locksley Way, Polo’s Apartments, Starkville – and was arrested at approximately 1:47 a.m. Saturday. Prince was charged with aggravated assault and transported to the Clay County Jail. Prince is incarcerated pending a bond hearing.
The circumstances surrounding the stabbing are still under investigation, and Lindley could not comment on alcohol as a factor in the attack. Lindley said both Davis and Prince are students at MSU.
