Bette Mahoney Rice, 86, a long-time resident of Starkville, passed away on August 8, 2011, from a year long battle of cancer.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church on August 13 at 1 p.m. Dr. Prentiss Gordon and Dr. Giles Lindley will perform the ceremony. There will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall after the ceremony to visit with the family.
Born on August 9,1924 in Itta Bena, Bette was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Starkville. She graduated from the University of Mississippi, and was a member of Chi-Omega sorority and later became an advisor to her sorority.
In 1969, after teaching at Sumner Elementary school in Sumner, for 10 years, she decided to pursue an advance degree at Mississippi State University where she earned her Master’s in Library Science. She began working in the Mississippi State library in 1970 and retired in 1990 as assistant director. After retirement she pursued her love of playing duplicative bridge with her friends and obtained the highly sought achievement – “Life Master.”
Bette was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend, who enjoyed her many friends, exercising, reading and visiting her family in Houston, Texas. She will truly be missed by all.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Albert Mahoney, Sr of Itta Bena.
She is survived by her son, Greek L. Rice, Sr. and his wife Donna; grandchildren, Greek Rice Jr., Barrett Rice and wife Jessica, Rivers Rice; and one great-grandson, Greek Rice III, all from Houston, Texas.
She is also, survived by her sister, Peggy Dailey of Charleston; nieces Rita Dailey, Chauncey Mahoney and Katheryn Miles; and nephew Roberson Dailey.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church in Starkville MS, or American Cancer Society.
