Reece Q. Shook Sr., 88, of Florence died Monday, June 13, 2011 at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 15 from 6-9 pm at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence. The service will be Thursday, June 16 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel followed burial at Florence Cemetery.
Mr. Shook was a native of Belmont. He moved to Starkville in 1939, then to Jackson in 1957, having lived in the Florence area for 27 years. He attended Belmont High School then joined the U.S. Marines in 1943 serving with the 3rd Marine Amphibious Corps in the South Pacific in the battles of Okinawa and Guam. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 687 and he also served 8 years with the Miss. National Guard.
A member of Corinth Baptist Church of Magee, he was ordained as a deacon in 1951. He promoted the Youth For Christ of Jackson. He was State Operations Manager for "The Clarion Ledger" until his retirement September 26, 1992.
He was preceded in death by his son, Reece Shook, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy “Dot” May Phillips Shook; son, Paul “Pete” A. Shook of Greenbriar, Ark.; daughters, Edna Moore of Springfield, Mo., Debbie Marsh of Magee, and Becky Shook of Florence; 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Children’s Cancer Center at University Hospital Research Center.
