Oktibbeha County supervisors will appoint someone to fill the unexpired term of District 1 Constable Jimmy Shurden, 68, who died Tuesday, a county official said.
Shurden did not seek re-election to the post, said Circuit Clerk Angie McGinnis.
McGinnis has reviewed the state law and believes a special election will not be necessary since the vacancy occurred in the final year of his term.
Democrats who qualified to run for the office are: Curtis White, William Ford, Joe Morse and Freddie Bardley. Republicans qualified to run are Shank Phelps, Tom Roberson and David Starsky.
The primary will be held Aug. 2. The general election is Nov. 8.
Visitation is set for today from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home. The church service will be Friday at 10 a.m.
