The Starkville Academy Volunteers built momentum throughout the 2011 tennis season and the senior members of the team have laid the foundation for that.
Starkville Academy defeated Clarksdale-Lee Academy 5-4 on the road Monday and earlier this season beat Winston Academy.
Positive signs for the Vols, who have struggled to win matches in previous seasons.
SA tennis coach Lynn Moorehead said the senior class has handled its careers well.
"When I became a coach, they were here," Moorehead said. "They have been the basis of the team. They've shown leadership on and off the court. We're just very proud they have been a part of this team. I wish them the best."
The senior members of the Vols are Anna Andrews, the daughter of Mike and Cheryl Andrews, Kali Burney, the daughter of Dennis and Melissa Burney, James McKell, the son of Raymond and Lauri McKell and Harrison Warren, the son of Randy and Vicky Warren.
In Tuesday's home 7-2 loss to Pillow Academy to close the regular season, it was seniors Warren and Andrews which pulled out victories for SA.
Warren won a 6-0, 6-4 decision in boys No. 1 singles, while Andrews recorded a 6-4, 6-2 victory in No. 2 girls singles.
In the other matches on Tuesday, McKell lost in No. 2 boys singles 6-1, 7-5, Abbie Vaughn lost 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 girls singles, Alex Vaughn and Will Christiansen lost in No. 1 boys doubles 6-0, 6-0, Jake Goodwin and Jamison McKee lost in No. 2 boys doubles 6-1, 6-3, Bell Hester and Kacey Faver lost 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 girls doubles, Anatasia Kasper and Burney lost 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 girls doubles, and Logan Crosland and Mary Austin Barber lost 6-3, 7-6 in mixed doubles.
