Mary Bennett Walker, known as “Mary B” to her many friends, age 90, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2011 at Philwood Suites in Columbus.
Mary was born on January 27, 1921 in Portsmouth, Va. to William Edward and Sallie York Bennett. She met her future husband, Ray, while he was stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Ray was a Navy Corpsman during WW II. They were married on September 20, 1944 at New Bern, N.C. just prior to Ray being deployed overseas with the Marines for the Okinawa invasion.
After Ray returned from the war, they moved to his boyhood home of Taylorsville, MS where they raised their two sons and owned and operated Walker’s Appliance and Auto for over 20 years. Ray was totally disabled during the last 5 years of his life and lived in a nursing home. Mary devotedly cared for him during this time. After Ray’s death, Mary lived in Taylorsville and worked at Trustmark Bank and Colonial Chapel Funeral Home.
In 2003, Mary moved to Roswell, GA to Manor on the Square Assisted Living to be closer to her children. She made many wonderful friends there and enjoyed activities at church, with friends and with her family. She returned to Mississippi with Tom and Cindy last year.
Mary was an active member of Taylorsville United Methodist Church and she faithfully served the Lord throughout her life. She was a member of Eastern Star, The Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, and the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims. She was devoted to her family, loved people and was always the life of the party. She was an avid reader and enjoyed making crafts and spaghetti sauce for the Taylorsville United Methodist Church Holiday Bazaar.
She is loved and survived by her children, Tom and Cindy Walker of Starkville, MS and Ben and Linda Walker of Forsyth, GA; grandchildren Ty Walker, Kelly Galloway, Rachel Walker, Stacey Greene, and Kaitlin Walker; three great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Walker Kelly and Lovell Walker; many nieces and nephews and many devoted friends.
