JACKSON — Newly-elected Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert was sworn in today at the Mississippi Department of Transportation administration building in Jackson.
Prior to being elected Transportation Commissioner, Tagert served as Administrator of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Authority and President of the organization's trade association, the Tennessee-Tombigbee Development Council, where he led the economic development and promotional efforts. While there, his accomplishments included the successful designation of the Marine Highway (M-65) Corridor and signing a recent International Agreement with the Panama Canal Authority to promote future trade and transportation via the Gulf of Mexico and Mississippi. In addition, Tagert currently serves as a member of the Trade and Transportation Advisory Council for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.
Following his swearing in, Tagert expressed his gratitude to his family and friends for the support he received throughout the campaign. He also said his priorities that he articulated during the campaign would be his focus as commissioner.
"I'm going to work to make sure the roadways and bridges in Mississippi are safe," Tagert said, noting transportation's link to economic development will also be a focus. "I'm going to work to continue the momentum that Mississippi has garnered with transportation and economic development."
Tagert also said how his votes will be guided. "My votes will be cast for one reason only and that's to best represent the interests of the Northern District and the state of Mississippi."
Prior to his position with the Tenn.-Tom. Water Authority, Tagert served in the United States Marine Corps., received a Bachelor of Science degree from Millsaps College, and Master of Science and Master of Public Policy and Administration degrees from Mississippi State University.
Commissioner Tagert is married to the former Mary Love Mortimer, of Kilmichael, and the couple has two children, Frances and Harlan. The Tagerts reside in Starkville and are members of the First United Methodist Church.
