The funeral for Jerry David Williams will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 3 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. The Rev. James L. Winter, rector, will preside.
Visitation will be held Monday, January 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Church Student Center and on Tuesday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. before the service. He will be interred in the church columbarium.
Mr. Williams died Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at the University Medical Center in Jackson. He was 80 years old.
A longtime resident of Starkville, Mr. Williams was born in Murray, Ky., and graduated from Murray State University with a degree in music education.
He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity and received his Masters of Music Education from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He served in the 3rd Armed Division of the U.S. Army at Ft. Knox, Ky. and was a member of the 179th Army Band at Ft. Carson, Colo.
Mr. Williams taught music in Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee, before moving to Starkville, where he was music director at First United Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. For many years, he conducted liturgy in Hebrew at Temple B’nai Israel in Columbus. He was employed by Mississippi State University for 36 years, where he was Head of the Choral Department and founded the University Madrigal Singers.
Mr. Williams served as Director of State Music Camp for over 30 years and as an advisor to vocal and piano majors at the University. He was a member of the National Education Association, Tennessee Education Association, Music Educators National Conference, Tennessee Music Educators Association and the American Choral Directors Association.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, LaVora Holland William, and survived by two daughters, Malinda (Rob) Cox of Ft. Bragg, N.C., and Rebekah (Steve) Smith of Ada, Mich.; a foster daughter Susan (Shaw) Blankenship of Crab Orchard, Ky.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
