Although there has been no official announcement from the Gator Bowl as of 5 p.m. Sunday, Garry Smits of the Florida Times-Union and The Associated Press have reported that the matchup for the Gator Bowl will be between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Michigan Wolverines.
The Times-Union learned from sources within the selection committee that Michigan (7-5) from the Big 10 will take on Mississippi State (8-4) from the Southeastern Conference for the 66th Gator Bowl on Jan. 1 at EverBank Field. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN2.
If it happens, it will be the first-ever appearance for the Bulldogs in the Gator Bowl. MSU will be the first SEC team in the Gator Bowl since Tennessee in 1994.
The Gator Bowl, beginning a four-year contract that pits teams from the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference, went with the winningest program in college football history and a team that enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds this season. It's a matchup bowl officials hope will draw fans and television ratings, and possibly lure a title sponsor.
The Wolverines are back in a bowl game after consecutive losing seasons under coach Rich Rodriguez. The No. 21 Bulldogs, meanwhile, are returning to a bowl for the first time in three years and first under second-year coach Dan Mullen.
