Only a few days remain for children to sign up to for the new and improved Starkville Upward Basketball program.
Billy Doughty and Jason Tiffin are co-directors for the new program.
Doughty said the new program is designed to provide the best possible basketball experience for the children while sharing the Christian faith.
“The Upward Basketball program has developed a very detailed step-by-step plan for practices that the coaches use,” Doughty said.
“The practices will help enhance the children’s skills and, of course, it will be different for each age group, but the number one goal is that everyone enjoys themselves.”
Registration for the Upward Basketball program is open through Friday. The fee is $70 per child. Basketball shorts are optional at a cost of $13.
Registration fee and forms can be dropped off at the First United Methodist Church office anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Register online at http://www.starkvilleupward.org .
Doughty said participants are required to attend one basketball evaluation. He said once registration is complete, children will confirm their jersey sizes and height.
“They will then complete a quick orientation before completing three shooting drills and three agility drills to help us evaluate each player,” Doughty said.
“Once the players are evaluated, a computer system will chose the teams based on each players skill level so we will be assured of some very competitive games once the season starts in January.”
Evaluations will take place at the First United Methodist Church Christian Life Center.
• For boys and girls in Kindergarten through fourth grade, evaluations will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 6 or Nov. 13.
• For boys and girls in fifth and sixth grades, evaluations will be from 11 a.m. until noon Nov. 6 or Nov. 13.
Doughty said teams will probably be announced sometime in early January. Practices will begin the week of Jan. 3, 2011, and the first game is set for Jan. 22, 2011. The final awards celebration, and the end of the season, will be Mar. 8, 2011.
