BRUNSWICK, Ga. — A memorial celebration of life service for John Lee Haney will be held on Monday at 6 p.m. at Christian Renewal Church of St. Simons Island, Ga. with burial in Wren at a later date.
Mr. Haney, 62, of Brunswick, Ga., passed away on Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at Hospice of the Golden Isles. He was born June 14,1948, in Amory to the late James Lemmon Haney and Opal Haney.
He attended Mississippi State University before joining the United States Air Force in 1967.
He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1971.
Mr. Haney was employed with Riverside Chemical in Canton and worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Atlanta, Ga. before moving to Brunswick, Ga. in the late 1970’s.
In Glynn County, Lee worked as a bartender at Richard’s on St. Simons Island after which he was an in-home caregiver for Mr. Harold Sigman and later for his own mother, Opal Haney.
Lee was a member of Tranquil United Methodist Church at Wren and most recently had attended Victory Assembly of God Church.
He enjoyed music, writing poetry, studying and sharing the Bible and sports. He helped coach Little League baseball on St. Simons.
Lee was a compassionate, witty and loyal friend to the young and old.
Survivors include his sisters, Mary Blanche (Bob) Rice of Brunswick, Ga. and Anne (Don) Johnson of St. Simons Island, Ga.; two nieces, Edie (Phil) Hipchen of Brunswick, Ga.and Robyn (Scott) Kicklighter of Camden County, Ga.; a nephew, John (Adrian) Thomas Johnson of St. Simons Island, Ga.; four great-nieces, Lindsey and Mariana Hipchen, and Liza and Mary Win Johnson and five great nephews, Baxter, Hunter Bailey, Chandler, Asher and Victer Kicklighter.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in his memory be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick. Georgia, 31525.
