WEST POINT – It may not have been the result that the Starkville 8-year-old All-Stars wanted to have on Monday, but the weekend proved they had gotten better.
Starkville finished second at the Dizzy Dean South State Tournament to Columbus after having the fifth-place showing it had the year before.
"I'm proud of the boys because it was an improvement," Starkville coach Brent DeWeese said.
Starkville was beaten twice by a tough Columbus squad 19-5 and 16-4.
The Columbus offense was hard to hold and hit several home runs out of the park.
"Columbus was the best team we've played all year," DeWeese said. "It's not an accident they won this tournament and they deserved to win.
"You always hate to lose, but at least, we lost to a good club."
