The fitness realm at Starkville Parks and Recreation Department is really starting to get warmed up.
SPRD director Herman Peters decided to begin a class on fitness at the Starkville Sportsplex and expects the participation to grow more as the summer approaches.
"It's getting close to the summer so everyone is getting to the crush rush right now," Peters said. "I'm thinking in May when it starts getting warm, it's really going to grow. When we get the chance to do stuff inside and outside, people will really come in and want to be a part of it."
The class begin in January and Peters said it's been a good four months.
"We have some regulars that come all of the time and a couple of people that come over from Columbus because I used to teach the class at the Y there," Peters said. "It's pretty steady with about 10 people per class. It's growing and people are consistently asking about it and wanting to join."
Peters said the emphasis of the class right now is the stomach area and the strengthening of the abdominal muscles.
"It's called Hard Core Class," Peters said. "We do cardio and stretching to get warmed up, then we do our ab workout and we do some cool down at the end."
Peters said anyone can come to the Travis Outlaw Center at the Sportsplex to join. The classes take place each Thursday at 6 p.m.
"There are posters everywhere, so they are welcome to come down, join in and work out with us," Peters said.
For more information, Peters can be reached at the Sportsplex at 662-323-2294.
