Mildred Winfield Bassett passed away on Nov. 9, 2013, at Starkville Manor after a lengthy illness. She was 96 and a lifelong resident of Starkville.
Retired from Herchedes Clock Factory, she was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino in Philadelphia, listening to live music and eating good food, especially her son’s barbecue and fried catfish.
Welch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at the funeral home, with service at 2 p.m. The Rev. Hank Anderson will officiate. Burial will follow at Oddfellows Cemetery in Starkville.
Mildred is survived by her son, Roger Bassett of Cleveland, Miss., grandsons Mason Bassett (Marilyn) of Starkville and Charles Bassett (Jennifer) of Columbus AFB, great-grandsons Mason Bassett Jr., Trent Bassett, Gairet Bassett and Breht Bassett, brother Earnest Cotton of Tucson, Ariz., sister Earline Cotton Boros of Santa Barbara, Cal., and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
She is preceded in death by husband O.B. Bassett, mother Clara Turner Winfield Cotton, father Mason Ethel Winfield, three brothers – Ethel Winfield, Alton Cotton and Charles R. Cotton – two sisters, Louise Winfield Smith Hawkins and Katherine Winfield Logan and daughter-in-law Elise Bassett.
Pallbearers are Dennis Jones, Bobby Palmertree, Terry Hawkins, Will Reynolds, Clint Mayo and James Lindsey.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Starkville Church of God.
