CLINTON – The high school cross country season came to conclusion Saturday as the Starkville teams competed at the Class 6A State meet.
In what coach Caroline Woomer called their “best race,” the Lady Yellowjackets finished third overall with 75 points. Tupelo claimed first with 42 points while Ocean Springs had 69 points to finish second.
“The girls had their best race," Woomer said. "They came together as a team. Most of them set personal records and they went out on that course and killed it."
Leading the charge was freshman Kate Mattox, who not only led Starkville, but was the top finisher overall. Mattox’s time of 14:39.2 not only won her a state championship, but was also the fifth fastest time in state meet history.
