Bryce Rader was driving west on Highway 82 between Columbus and Starkville at about 3 p.m. on Labor Day when he saw Steve Young walking west along the road.
Young carried an 80-pound backpack loaded with supplies — a sleeping bag, a tent, clothing and more. He used a walking stick, with the initials of each of the states he had visited painted on the stick in blue. But Rader, a business major at Mississippi State University, said one detail caught his eye above all: a sign marked “Hebrews 13:2” strapped to the back of Young’s pack.
