Mississippi State University reported a shooting at the Sprint Mart on Blackjack Road just west of campus early Saturday morning.
The university issued a Maroon Alert text message warning at 12:53 a.m. Saturday, warning students and alert subscribers that a shooting had been reported at the convenience store.
Reports initially suggested the suspect, who the university described as a “light-skinned black male wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans,” was seen fleeing on foot toward campus. However, the university later provided an update, saying the suspect reportedly shot at the victim, who then fled toward the university.
The university said the suspect fled down Oktoc Road in a red vehicle.
Oktibbeha County Sheriff Steve Gladney said his department responded to the call. He said deputies looked into the matter, but so far, had not been able to determine anything conclusive about the reported incident.
“We got a call and believed shots were fired,” he said. “We got out there and did a search with the (MSU) police department. We didn’t find any shell casings or anything at the scene. No witnesses, no anything. Someone at the store thought they heard gunshots, and we responded. Right now we don’t have anything to go on other than the call that originally came in.”
No injuries or fatalities were reported in the alleged incident.
