One of my most vivid childhood memories was sitting at my grandmother's table for a meal — I was something like 6 or 7 — when she sat a plate in front of me that donned the dreaded spoonful of butter beans.
For the record, to this day I'd rather use a bamboo stick to fight a grizzly bear than eat butter beans or any of that vegetable species' rancid little cousins (e.g. purple hull or black-eyed peas, lima beans, English peas, etc.).
