Mona Manning Lyon was born on December 17, 1926 to George Warren Manning, Sr. and Mattie Hughes Manning on a farm near Drew, Mississippi. She attended the Drew public schools and graduated from Drew High School in 1943. While a student at Mississippi State College for Women, she was Business Manager of the school newspaper and graduated Suma Cum Laude in 1947. She worked for the Mississippi Extension Service until 1951, when she married her husband, George Davis Lyon of Cedar Bluff, Mississippi. They settled in Clarksdale, where they raised their two children. She taught Home Economics at Clarksdale – Coahoma High School and Coahoma County High School. After a few years away from teaching, she became a science teacher at Kirkpatrick Elementary School. She passed away on June 19, 2013 at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was a long time and faithful member of Clarksdale Baptist Church, where she played handbells and sang in the choir for many years. She also enjoyed membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Lyon enjoyed over 50 years of playing Bridge with a special group of friends. Having inherited her mother’s green thumb, she was an avid and knowledgeable gardener throughout her life.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, her son George Davis Lyon, Jr., M.D., her brothers, George Warren Manning, Jr., Roy Manning, and Malcolm Manning; her sisters Doris Manning, Bonnie Manning Walker, and Mattie Lee Manning Smith.
She is survived by her daughter Catherine Lyon Chernecky (Rick) of Ocean Springs; her daughter-in-law Cheryl Frazier Lyon of Starkville; and her grandchildren David Manning Lyon (Brooke) of Jacksonville, AL, Anna Lyon Killingsworth (Ryan) of Ridgeland, and George Maxwell Lyon of Starkville; her brother Farno Clark (Bud) Manning of Merigold; her special nephew Hugh Ellis Walker of Cleveland; her special niece Mary Rose McCormick of Olive Branch; and her brother-in-law James Roland Lyon (June) of Cedar Bluff.
Church friends Larry and Glenda Brasher deserve our special appreciation for “adopting” Miss Mona and being so helpful to her for the last 4 years. We are so grateful.
The family would also like to thank the following ladies of Providence Companion Care for their loving and compassionate assistance given to their mother over the last weeks: Kimberly Dye, Angela Suggs, and Shay Barfield. The Lyons are also extremely gratetful to the staff of Sta-Home Health Care – specifically Jennifer Walton, R. N. - and Grace Hospice which assisted her through her last months.
Services will be held at Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home on Saturday, June 22, at 11:00 am with visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 am at the funeral home.
