Mr. Charles B. Duke Jr., 89, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, in Hermitage, Tenn. after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012 at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville.
Burial will follow at Oktibbeha Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at Welch Funeral Home.
Welch Funeral Home of Starkville is in charge of arrangements.
He was a graduate of Enid High School in Enid and attended Mississippi State University. He enlisted in the United States Army during his sophomore year. He served his country in the European Theater during World War II in Italy, France and Germany. After the war, he returned to MSU, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He received his Master's Degree in Administration from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis.
He began his career teaching returning military veterans methods to improve farming practices and later began working with the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service as an Assistant County Agent in Pontotoc County. He was promoted to County Agent in Calhoun County, and later became District Agent of the Mississippi Extension Service on the MSU campus.
Following his retirement in 1979, he developed many hobbies, one of which was woodworking. He enjoyed attending craft fairs and making furniture for his family to enjoy. He also had a love of fishing, camping and traveling.
He is a member of First Baptist Church of Starkville.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joyce; daughter, Carol Templeton (Terry) of Hermitage Tenn.; four grandsons, Thad Templeton (Angie) of Winston Salem, N.C. , Marc McCollum (Katie) of Charlotte, N.C., Ben McCollum (Kristin) of Charleston, S.C. and Brent Templeton of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and seven great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Duke McCollum (Stewart); his parents, Charles B. Duke and Maude Brown Duke; and one brother, Roy B. Duke.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to First Baptist Church Starkville, Children's Building Fund.
